Wimbledon 2026: Everything you need to know
Before we get into the details of Wimbledon 2026, let’s briefly rewind to see how this iconic tournament became such a big part of British sporting culture.
Why Wimbledon is the heart of the British summer
First played in 1877, Wimbledon is the oldest live tennis tournament in the world, and many would say it’s the most prestigious, too. Hosted by the All England Lawn Tennis Club, it’s the only Grand Slam still played on grass, and that alone makes it unique.
Originally staged on Worple Road before moving to Church Road in the early 1920s, Wimbledon has delivered unforgettable moments for decades. From epic finals to emotional home victories, it’s a tournament built on history, tradition and drama.
Some moments that helped define Wimbledon include:
- 🎾 John McEnroe’s infamous “YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS” outburst
- 🎾 Pat Cash climbing into the stands following his 1987 win
- 🎾 Martina Navratilova’s record-breaking ninth title
- 🎾 Andy Murray ending Britain’s long wait for a men’s champion
It’s no surprise that, every July, fans across the country look for the best place to watch Wimbledon.
Players who made Wimbledon history
Martina Navratilova’s record of nine Wimbledon singles victories between 1978 and 1990 remains unsurpassed by any other player. On the men’s side, Roger Federer’s eight titles – including five in a row – cemented his legacy on Centre Court.
These records are part of what makes the tournament a must-watch sport every year, whether you’re watching courtside or sitting in one of your favourite pubs showing Wimbledon.
When is Wimbledon 2026?
This year, Wimbledon is expected to take place from Monday 29th June until Sunday 12th July.
The opening two days will focus on the first rounds of the men’s and women’s singles. The men’s and women’s doubles are set to get underway midweek, with mixed doubles joining later in the first week, all weather permitting.
The first week will cover the opening rounds of the singles competitions, building towards the latter stages. The second week then sees the conclusion of the fourth round, followed by the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
When is the Wimbledon final?
The Wimbledon Finals take place on Saturday the 11th of July and Sunday the 12th of July, with the women's final on Saturday and the men’s singles final on Sunday, rounding off the tournament in traditional Wimbledon style.
Who will win Wimbledon 2026?
Wimbledon 2026 looks set to deliver another blockbuster summer of tennis. On the men’s side, reigning champion Jannik Sinner and two-time winner Carlos Alcaraz are expected to renew their rivalry, with both among the favourites to lift the trophy once again.
Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic looks to equal Roger Federer’s Open Era record of eight Wimbledon titles. British interest will be high around Jack Draper, while Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton add further depth to the men’s draw.
In the women’s singles, defending champion Iga Świątek arrives as one of the standout contenders after claiming her first Wimbledon title in 2025. Three-time semi-finalist Aryna Sabalenka will also be targeting a breakthrough on grass.
