Eleanor of Castille and King Edward I were married for 36 years and during this time, she never left his side.When she died during a royal progress trip, the king was so affected by his wife’s death that he decided to erect 12 lavishly decorated monuments in her honour. They would rise up in the locations where her funeral cortège rested overnight en route back to London, to her final resting place in Westminster Abbey.

The Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire
Today, Waltham Cross stands proudly in a square surrounded by an iron fence. Even though it's been significantly restored since being built in 1291, it's nevertheless still viewed as a marvel of 13th-century stonework.
