Cambridge on a plate: the best places to eat
The Bridge
We’re going to start on the north-east outskirts of town in the countryside surrounding Cambridge, at the Bridge. A handsome country pub with a spectacular setting on the west bank of the River Cam, you can soak up epic views out across the water while you eat here. The pub’s Chef & Brewer menu includes an appetising selection of starters, a wide choice of hand-pressed burgers and classics like pies, smothered chicken and hand-battered fish & chips. As well as British favourites, there are also dishes from around the world, including Asian-inspired dishes and curries, as well as a mean Sunday roast to go at.
The Little Rose
Heading back into town, the Little Rose is one of the top places to eat in Cambridge city centre. Especially if you love seafood. Pull up a chair in this 500-year-old building surrounded by original features like exposed timber beams, and pick from a menu packed with seafood favourites, including oysters and a whole host of fish dishes. You’ll find plenty of other options like chicken and steaks, as well as an enticing range of Sunday roasts. And speaking of enticing, wait ’til you see the dessert menu.
The Red Lion
Lying on the south-west outskirts of town in the pleasant village of Grantchester, the Red Lion is a great option if you’re looking for nice places to eat in Cambridge outside of the city centre. Serving traditional pub food made to a high standard, this picturesque gastropub has a stunning thatched roof and is surrounded by flowers in the warmer months. The food menu includes everything from bar snacks and starters to sharers, lunch options and larger mains like burgers, steaks and fish and chips. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as Sunday roasts to crown your weekend in style.
The Anchor
Serving fresh seasonal food that caters for both traditional and more adventurous tastes, the Anchor impresses from the moment you step inside its doors. Unless you arrive from Silver Street Bridge, you won’t have a clue about the view that awaits from this gastropub’s dining room and terrace. Gaze out across the punting boats on the River Cam from one of the most captivating places to eat in Cambridge, as you tuck into classic dishes with a modern twist. You can tell lots of thought’s gone into the menu, and that really shines through when you pick up your knife and fork.
The Crown Inn
Finishing where we started, in the pretty countryside around town. Almost 20 miles west of the city centre, the Crown Inn is one of the top places to eat in Cambridge’s surrounding area. This country-style gastropub in Eaton Socon is a great place to go for down-to-earth food cooked with care. There’s a strong selection of steaks and burgers, along with an array of pub classics. There are separate menus for breakfast, lunch and Sundays, while there’s a wide choice for kids too.
Whether you’re visiting for the weekend, a student in the city or you’ve lived in the area your whole life, there are lots of great places to eat in Cambridge. We hope we've helped you add some new Cambridge pubs to your list of must-visits.
