While menus may differ from pub to pub, here’s a shout out to some of our favourite pub meal picks at Greene King…
Fish and Chips
We couldn’t talk about pub classics without mentioning this beloved British favourite. Fish and chips offers a nostalgic joy for so many, whether it brings back memories of seaside trips or visits to the local chippy, it’s a comfort dish that never fails to shine.
With crisp battered fish, fluffy chips and your choice of garden or mushy peas, it’s good food you can make entirely your own with a squeeze of lemon, a sprinkle of salt, a dash of vinegar or a splash of ketchup and mayonnaise.
Full English Breakfast
The full English breakfast is a great way to start the day, with roots in British dining stretching back centuries. It’s a hearty, warming, and guaranteed to keep you full. Think crispy bacon, fried or scrambled eggs, golden toast dripping in butter, and all the tasty trimmings. Whether it’s a cure for a big night or a way to fuel for the day, you can guarantee a clean plate and a big smile every time.Beef Lasagne
Lasagne is a signature Italian dish, with origins as far back as the Middle Ages. Today, it’s a failsafe favourite, with layers of sheet pasta, rich Bolognese sauce, creamy bechamel, and plenty of gooey cheese.Baked until the top is golden and bubbling, it’s the perfect blend of flavours and even tastier when served with garlic bread to mop up every last bit of sauce.
Sunday Roast
What better way to unwind after a busy weekend than with the comfort of a classic Sunday roast? It's great food with a tradition dating back to the reign of King Henry VII.
Whether you’re tucking in with family or close friends, you can choose from succulent meats, like roast chicken, beef or turkey, or flavour-packed veggie options, and, of course, all the essential trimmings. Think golden roast potatoes with seasonal veg, fluffy Yorkshire puddings and rich gravy that’s never in short supply.
You may be a brilliant home cook, but you don’t always need the stress of hosting. So stop by your local Greene King on a Sunday, and savour full plates with absolutely zero faff.
Burgers
Show us someone who doesn’t like a burger, and we’ll show you someone who’s never had one done right. This pub food staple is so versatile, whether you’re craving juicy beef, crispy chicken or a flavour-packed veggie option. Stacked high with tasty trimmings, like crispy fries or fluffy chips, it’s the kind of meal best eaten with your hands and with little care for napkins. Sink your teeth in and truly savour. The humble burger as we know it today is thought to have started in the US in the late 19th century, although there’s a bit of a dispute over who invented it first!
It rose in popularity in the UK in the ‘50s with the launch of Wimpy fast food chains, and McDonald's in the ‘70s. But while it may have begun life as a fast-food classic, our Greene King chefs take their time to perfect every plate. Even if we can’t promise you won’t polish it off in record time...
Pie
When it comes to classic comfort food, you can’t beat a pie. Golden pastry encases a rich filling, from tender chunks of steak to juicy chicken or a savoury veggie delight. Our mouth is watering at the mere thought of it!Traditionally served with green veg, your choice of mashed potato or chips and a generous drizzle of gravy, it has cosy comfort baked into every bite.
Pies have roots that trace back to medieval times, when they were known as pastry coffins used to preserve meat. They became a culinary staple by the 16th century, with modern fillings like steak and kidney and chicken and mushroom becoming popular.
Sausage and mash
On cold winter days, when all you want is comfort on a plate, nothing hits the spot quite like sausage and mash.
The classic dish dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when sausages became an easy way to make the most of the available meat. And it’s still a beloved classic today.
Plump, juicy bangers on creamy, buttery mash, topped with a rich onion gravy that ties the whole dish together. It may be simple, but sometimes the best comfort food meals are the ones that need little fuss.
Hunter’s Chicken
Hunter’s Chicken is always a crowdpleaser, combining succulent chicken breast with smoky bacon, melted cheese, and a tangy barbecue sauce.
It’s thought to have gained popularity in the late 20th century after being inspired by the rustic “hunter-style” dishes of Europe, including the French chicken chasseur, which is chicken cooked with mushrooms, onions, and a rich wine or tomato-based sauce.
Curry
There’s no denying that the classic curry has been wholeheartedly embraced as a staple of British pub food. Take Chicken Tikka Masala, for example.
It’s said to have been created in the UK when a customer asked for a sauce to accompany their aromatic chicken tikka, and today, it’s often hailed as Britain’s national dish.
Whether you prefer something creamy and indulgent or fiery and full of spice, there’s a curry to satisfy every craving. Pair it with fluffy rice, crispy poppadom's, and a sweet side of chutney, and you’ve got a pub meal worth devouring
Don’t forget pudding!
No matter how hearty the main, there’s always room for something sweet. At Greene King, we love classic desserts, from sticky toffee pudding and indulgent brownies to creamy, dreamy scoops of ice cream. With plenty of options to satisfy every craving, you can treat yourself or share with someone special if you can’t manage it all.

A good pub serves food, but at Greene King, we believe a great pub pairs it with perfect drinks. From red wines to draw out the rich flavours to fruity cocktails to complement a satisfying lunch.
