Whether you're a first-time dog parent or a seasoned pro, this guide is designed to help you and your canine companion explore all that Manchester has to offer.
The best dog walks in Manchester
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to dog walks in and around Manchester. Grab your furry pal, strap on their lead and get ready to explore. Here are some of the best dog-friendly walks in Manchester and its surrounding area.
Heaton Park
Just north of the city centre, Heaton Park covers a lovely 600 acres of land, meaning there’s plenty of space to explore and run around. While dogs are allowed off the lead in all the main areas of the park, they do have to be on the lead in the playgrounds and animal centre.
There’s also livestock in and around the park, so be mindful to keep your pet on the lead if you spot any nearby. If you need a break from all the exploring, head to the dog-friendly Stables Café or the Lakeside Café. There are also plenty of dog waste bins throughout the park.
Fletcher Moss Park
Located in Didsbury, Fletcher Moss is perfect for long dog walks. There are open fields where your dog can have a good run off the lead. You can extend the walk through Stenner Woods, and if you’re feeling energetic, you can carry on along the River Mersey.
The park is open from dawn to dusk every day of the year. Dogs aren’t allowed in the botanical gardens or inside the café, but you can sit outside the café with them, come rain or shine.
Tatton Park
Tatton Park is a historical estate set in 1,000 acres of parkland. This park welcomes dogs of all shapes and sizes, and they can be let off the lead to roam the beautiful grounds – as long as they’re well-behaved.
Just be mindful that livestock and deer roam the park, so if your four-legged friend is likely to go on a chase, it’s best to keep them on the lead. It’s also worth noting that the park has designated dog waste bins at both of the main entrances, meaning you’ll need to hold onto your poo bags if you’re in the main area.
That said, it makes up for its lack of bins with a self-service dog cleaning and shampoo station, where you can wash and dry your pooch after a muddy walk. You will need to pay for it, but it’s worth it if you want to avoid a mess in the back of your car! You’ll find it just by the main car park.
Dove Stone Reservoir
Set within the beautiful Peak District National Park, a short drive from Manchester, Dove Stone Reservoir is a haven for dog walking.
Here you can walk 2.5 miles around the edge of the reservoir, and you’ll find plenty of woodland paths to explore too. Plus, there’s a picnic area along the way in case you and your pal need a well-deserved break.
There are options to walk further across the open moorland if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. The Dovestone circular will take you on a 9.5km hike stretching around three reservoirs and past the famous Greenfield waterfall.

The Fountain House
Located in the heart of Manchester, overlooking Albert Square and Manchester’s Town Hall, is the Fountain House – one of our favourite pet-friendly pubs in Manchester. Take a break from exploring the wonderful sights the city has to offer, and enjoy a delicious meal and drink with your pooch.
If the sun’s out, there’s an outside terrace where you can enjoy the food menu al-fresco. And if the Manchester skies are grey and wet, head into the bar area and enjoy the atmosphere.
Ye Olde Cock
Located in Didsbury, just a few short steps (and paws) away from Fletcher Moss, Ye Olde Cock welcomes furry customers of all shapes and sizes. It’s one of our many pet-friendly pubs in Manchester and its surrounding areas.
And being so close to Fletcher Moss means double the fun for you and your dog. First off is a long walk through the park and along the river, then it’s straight to the pub for an ice-cold pint and a bowl of water. The Sunday roasts are also great if you’re feeling peckish.
The Trevor Arms
Just a few miles southwest of the city centre is the trendy Manchester suburb of Chorlton-cum-Hardy, a lively dog-loving town with pubs, bars and some fantastic walks on your doorstep.
The Trevor Arms is located in the heart of the community and welcomes dogs with open arms. Why not take a stroll around Chorlton Water Park, before stopping by for a bite to eat and a drink? Weather permitting, there’s a great beer garden to enjoy. Or, if it’s raining cats and dogs, simply cosy up inside where it’s warm and toasty.
Things to remember
Just a few things to remember before you head to one of our dog-friendly pubs in Manchester with your four-legged friend beside you.
First, keep your dogs on their best behaviour. While many of our staff members and your fellow guests may love dogs, it makes the pub experience better for everyone if we’re all minding our manners.
Secondly, while your pup may snuggle up on the sofa or armchair at home, it’s not ideal for other guests. So please keep them cosy on the floor.

If you want to hop on public transport, dogs are allowed on the Metrolink tram, as well as trains. They just need to be well-behaved, kept on the lead and off the seats. Buses allow dogs on for an extra charge of £1, but it’s at the driver’s discretion.
