Greene King and the environment: better choices, lighter impact
We’re on a journey to do right by people and planet, looking at everything from our pubs and breweries to the food and drink we serve. Our goal? To reach Net Zero by 2040 and build a business that’s stronger, fairer and better for the future.
Our Net Zero ambition has been developed to align with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology to keep global warming well below 2°C, and our roadmap was validated by the SBTi in January 2025
By building programmes to reduce carbon emissions, reduce resource use, promote circularity, improve biodiversity, and source responsibly, we’re becoming a stronger, more sustainable business.
Working closely with our suppliers, teams, and customers, we continuously improve our operations to deliver sustainable choices, responsible sourcing, and full compliance with environmental best practice.
Our key pillars
Operations and the environment
Within our operations, we're committed to minimising our environmental impact by reducing waste, prioritising circularity and emphasising the reduction, reuse, and recycling of resources.
We remain focused on our targets, in 2025 the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved our 2040 net zero target and re-verified our near-term target to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
Suppliers and the environment
By collaborating with our suppliers, we're committed to reducing the environmental impact of our value chain, striving for best practices and complying with all environmental requirements. We have prioritised a collaborative approach with our suppliers to enable us to achieving our decarbonisation, deforestation and human rights commitments
Our products and the environment
Through menu development and innovation, we're committed to reducing the environmental impact of our food and drink offers. We strive to develop our menus in consideration of our goal to lower the emissions associated with our food. And this goes for our Greene King brewery too: we're helping reduce the environmental impacts of our brewing operations by optimising our infrastructure and reviewing supplier relationships. In 2027 our new Westgate brewery will open with targets to reduce our water use by up to 50% in the production of our beers.
