Greene King Elevates Experiences in Its Suffolk Heartland With Over £3 Million Invested in Pubs

Greene King, the Bury St Edmunds-based pub company and brewer, has invested more than £3 million in its pubs across Suffolk in 2025.

Originally founded in Bury St Edmunds in 1799, Greene King is deeply ingrained in the rich history of Suffolk. The company owns 79 pubs across the county spanning both its managed and leased, tenanted and franchise divisions, which are at the heart of their local communities.

Greene King has significantly invested in its Suffolk pubs in 2025 as the company looks to improve customer experiences. A total of eight sites have reopened following major refurbishments this year, with two pubs situated near to Greene King’s brewery in Bury St Edmunds. The Greengage on Tollgate Lane and The Fox on Eastgate Street each received six-figure investments.

Key investment highlights include the relaunch of the Royal George in Ipswich in April this year. Part of the Flaming Grill family, the Royal George received significant improvements both internally and externally to enhance the pub’s sports offering and elevate its alfresco dining area. The works introduced a range of modern-day comforts, enabling the pub to better cater for families, friends and sports fans alike.

Most recently, locals in Felixstowe have been able to enjoy the new and improved facilities at the historic Grosvenor Greene King pub on Ranelagh Road, which officially reopened its doors to the public on 29 November following a month-long refurbishment.

Across Greene King Pub Partners – Greene King’s leased, tenanted and franchise division – notable investments include The Crown in Framlingham and the Half Moon in Mildenhall, which underwent a six-figure refurbishment and reopened as a Hive Pub franchise this summer, complete with a revamped outdoor space and an updated sports area with pool, darts and TV screens showing the latest live sports fixtures.
This year’s investments programme builds on other significant Pub Partners refurbishments in Suffolk in recent years, including the Victoria in Thurston, The Swan in Needham Market and The Station Hotel in Ipswich.

Nick Mackenzie, chief executive of Greene King, said: “Investing in our Suffolk pubs is about much more than refurbishing buildings – it’s about strengthening the communities that have been a key part of Greene King’s journey for more than two centuries. We’re pleased to announce that we have invested over £3 million in our pubs in Suffolk this year, which is part of a wider programme of activity to strengthen our offering and deliver outstanding experiences in pubs across the country.

“Pubs play a vital role in bringing people together, driving local job creation and making safe and welcoming spaces for visitors of all backgrounds. By continuing to enhance and protect these much-loved spaces, we’re ensuring they remain vibrant community hubs for generations to come. We’re incredibly proud to be deepening our commitment to Suffolk and the people who make our pubs such special places.”
