Greene King Pub Partners has confirmed its status as the industry leader in training for leased and tenanted publicans after winning the Best Leased & Tenanted Training Programme at the National Innovation in Training Awards.

The award was presented at Café de Paris in London on Tuesday 26 November and recognised Greene King’s Induction & Beyond training programme, which offers a bespoke approach to licensee training that is tailored to suit an individual’s requirements.

The award-winning programme was introduced in spring 2018 and since then has seen more than 150 licensees undertake the programme. Each of these licensees then went on to have free, follow-up training in their pub and more than half also chose to invest in further training with Greene King Pub Partners to help with their ongoing development.

Sarah Milward, central operations manager, said: “We’re over the moon to receive this accolade and are so delighted that the hard work of the training team has been recognised. Our support for partners is ongoing and it’s not a one-off interaction when they first join us. We welcome them to our training centre in Bury St Edmunds for a three-day induction and then continue with follow-up visits to them in their pubs. It’s a continuing partnership and our team of trainers consistently go the extra mile to offer our partners all the training support they need.”

Key to the programme’s success is a training needs analysis, which the training team conducts with a prospective partner before they take on a pub with Greene King Pub Partners. This helps to understand their experience of the industry, strengths and areas needing improvement, which in turn helps the team identify what they can do to help the new partners learn and develop.

Training continues to be available for a partner and their teams for the entirety of their time with Greene King Pub Partners, with access to in-pub training, e-learning courses or group workshops at the training centre.

Wayne Shurvinton, managing director of Greene King Pub Partners, said: “Winning this NITA award is a fantastic achievement and well-deserved, following the dedication and commitment shown by the training team to offer first-class learning and development opportunities to publicans.

“At Greene King Pub Partners, we have a proven track record as an investor in people and I am thrilled to see this recognised at a national level. We believe that investing in helping our partners develop and gain new skills is core to our mutual success and feedback we’ve had from partners undertaking the programme has been full of praise. Congratulations to everyone involved on this outstanding success.”
