Even more great news for dog-lovers: Wednesday the 26th of August marks National Dog Day, also known as International Dog Day; an annual, nationwide celebration of man's best friend. What is National Dog Day?
National Dog Day – it's self-explanatory, really! It's a celebration of all things canine and a reminder of everything dogs give us, from companionship to mental well-being and more. Founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige, it began as an opportunity to promote the importance of adopting from shelters rather than supporting intensive and unethical breeding. Although it started in the U.S, before long, it had grown into an international event. Fun fact – Colleen Paige is also responsible for National Puppy Day (March 23rd) and National Cat Day (October 29th). A true animal advocate!
How to get involved?
There are numerous ways you can get involved with International Dog Day, whether you're a proud dog owner or not.
Donate to a shelter or sponsor a dog
International Dog Day began as a method of supporting shelters, sanctuaries and charities, so why not donate to a local organisation? Shelters are often heavily reliant on donations for food, medical expenses, and facility maintenance, so every penny counts. You can even donate essential items like pet food and toys, or better yet, volunteer your time to help with daily operations.
Adopt a new friend
Now, this one comes with a caveat – only adopt a dog if you're 100% confident you can cope, financially, emotionally and physically. After all, dogs require patience and persistence, particularly when you adopt from a shelter. Ask yourself if you're truly prepared for a long-term commitment. From daily exercise and training to grooming and vet bills, dogs can be high maintenance, so think carefully before welcoming a new furry friend into the family.

Never underestimate the power of social media when it comes to raising awareness for good causes! It's quick, easy and doesn't cost a penny. Make some dog-friendly treats
Consider yourself a bit of a baker? There are plenty of dog-friendly recipes online, from pet-safe cakes using natural ingredients like pumpkin puree and xylitol-free peanut butter to treats and biscuits. However, if you're disastrous in the kitchen, you can always pick up a packet of tasty treats from your local pet supplies store instead.
Head to a dog-friendly pub
Hey, this is one you can both enjoy! After you've embarked (get it, em–barked?) on a long, leisurely dog walk, head to a dog-friendly pub near you and reward yourself with something delicious, or at least a nice, refreshing pint of Greene King beer while your best buddy has a well-deserved snooze.
