Greene King Unfiltered:
Live our history through art

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but for us, they uncover the rich stories and fantastic facts that make our brand so unique.

We've been running pubs and brewing award-winning beer from our base in Bury St. Edmunds since the company was founded in 1799, so it's no surprise we have a few tales to tell. But rather than keeping them locked away, we're bringing them to life through distinctive artwork in our pubs, from attention-grabbing photographs to colourful prints.

Why did we decide to name one of our beers Level Head? How did the Beer Bottle Boys help our brewery? What on earth is a tintometer? We'll be answering these questions and many more here and on our blog, Behind the Bar. You can find even more stories by scanning the QR codes on the plaques below our artworks in our Greene King pubs.

Which story will you read about today? Take a journey with us and discover the history of Greene King, unfiltered.

Our rich history and heritage

The Tintometer: A study in colour

How did our first brewers master the art of the perfect pint? The answer lies deep within our Greene King archives, and a small little piece of glass.

This precious artifact was part of a larger device known as a 'Tintometer', invented by Joseph Williams Lovibond in the late 1880s. We take a closer look at why the first tintometers were developed, how they work, and how beer quality control has changed over the centuries.

A history of Abbot Ale

Did you know our most famous beer was named in a public competition held in the 1950s? There's a lot more to learn about the award-winning Abbot Ale.

Find out how we make it, how it tastes and why it's such an important member of our collection of pints.

Meet the Beer Bottle Boys

Recruited for their physical fitness, the Beer Bottle Boys were once the lifeblood of the Bury St. Edmunds brewery, working on bottling and hauling large crates.

But they also became a formidable force in the local sporting world too. Read on for more details, including a historic interview from one of the Beer Bottle Boys themselves.
