ABOUT THE YE OLDE TRIP TO JERUSALEM, NOTTINGHAM
Cherished by locals and tourists alike, the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem has long stood as a testament to Nottingham’s rich history and community spirit. Although this pub’s legacy may be a curious compendium of myth and legend, signifiers of centuries past can be found in its various nooks and crannies, and there is no denying the palpable sense of intrigue as you step through the front door.WITHIN THE CASTLE WALLS
Nottingham Castle sits proudly atop a sandstone ridge known as Castle Rock, overlooking the city below. This imposing Stuart Restoration-era ducal mansion was originally a wooden motte-and-bailey castle built in 1068, two years after the Norman Conquest, by order of William the Conqueror. While you may be familiar with the castle from its numerous appearances in films, TV shows, plays and folktales, it has long been a symbol of Nottingham’s heritage, acting as both a military stronghold and a royal palace where likes of Queen Joan of Navarre, Edward IV and Richard III once resided.
What you might not know is that the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is connected to Nottingham Castle via a network of manmade caves. Thanks to their naturally cool, consistent temperatures, the caves proved useful for the fermentation and storage of ale, showcasing the ingenuity of Medieval brewing practices. The Olde Trip still uses the connecting caves as cellars for storing stock and equipment.
