The name is said to come from its association with the maritime activities that Portsmouth is world-famous for, notably the trade of spices and rare materials brought into England from all corners of the globe – with Portsmouth's Spice Island being a popular port of call on this journey. A notorious haunt of smugglers, sailors, merchants and revellers looking to spend their wages beyond the reach of the city authorities, it is one of the only surviving pubs in an area that once housed many inns and taverns. Today, while the smugglers and somewhat seedy reputation are lost to time, the pub is no less lively, offering some of the best views of the city and waterfront – as well as a hearty menu and well-stocked bar that any old-time sailor would approve of.
