With the Six Nations fast approaching Lewis visited St Margarets pub in Twickenham for the Greene King tackle bag challenge.
The atmosphere of a home nations rugby clash is one of the things I’ll always remember from my playing career. The noise, the anticipation, the jangling nerves… you just can’t beat it.
So although it’s been a while since my playing days, when Greene King asked me to help predict the results of the upcoming home nations matches in a tackle bag challenge, I didn’t take much persuading!
They had gathered rugby fans from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales at a pub near Twickenham, but luckily the event wasn’t quite as vigorous as a full international. After a couple of my own attempts, I mostly got to soak up the atmosphere and score the tackles as the home nations’ fans went head-to-head.
I had a really fun time and it was great to be reminded once again of how the sport brings people together, no matter who they support. That good-natured rivalry makes for a cracking setting, which is what watching live sport is all about. And, since the event was partnered by Greene King IPA, we could all analyse our performances over a beer afterwards too!
While we were at the pub, the staff informed me that St Margaret’s has a long history of being one of the best rugby pubs in the UK, which was hardly surprising given that it’s just a stone’s throw away from the home of English rugby. With the pub attracting supporters from around the world on a regular basis, it’s probably the closest you can come to watching a match right there in the stadium – in more ways than one!
Greene King has a long and celebrated history with rugby, from supporting it at a grassroots level right the way through to the Premiership.
With such strong ties to the sport, it’s good to know that no matter where you are in the country during this year’s international fixtures, there’s sure to be a Greene King rugby pub showing the match – and that’s surely something to celebrate.
