Jason Flexen is Operations Manager for Greene King’s Farmhouse Inns. With around 50 pubs across the country Farmhouse Inns offers great carveries and portion sizes that will not disappoint. However, they are most famous for their homemade cakes produced by a team of Cake-a-tiers.
If you go into any Farmhouse Inn you will immediately spot the cake display counter. The cakes always look amazing, even if I do say so myself, and even if you fill up too much on your meal, our Cakeaway service lets our guests take a slice (or more!) home to enjoy later. In fact some people just like to come in and grab a slice or two to share with family or friends.
I am sure some people will look at our cakes and think that they must be brought in but they are all baked and decorated in our restaurants every day, which is why we decided we should do more to recognise the skills of our teams who create these amazing cakes for our guests.
Towards the end of last year we launched our Cake-a-tier programme. It means that every one of our bakers has the title of Cake-a-tier and their own uniform which distinguishes them from the rest of the kitchen team.
Some of our highest selling cake sites are making over 50 sponges a day to keep up with demand so the guys are very busy. They also have license to use their creativity to come up with their own flavours and looks, which once resulted in a Crème Egg cake being shared over 2 million times on social media!
