With The Great British Bake Off’s (GBBO) tenth anniversary grand final just around the corner, tension and treacle is in the air. If it’s anything like last year’s final, then more than seven million Brits will tune in to watch 2019’s final four ‘prove’ they’ve got what it takes to be crowned Star Baker, with 57% of young adults (18-34 year olds) admitting to watching the series week-in week-out. BUT new research from Farmhouse Inns dining and carvery, the 70-strong carvery brand, has revealed that we’re a nation of cake con-artists who pass off shop-bought cakes as our own.
Despite being avid fans, a fifth (19%) of Brits say they never bake at home, with over a third (38%) listing ‘time’ as a hurdle, and one in five (20%) lacking in the confidence to crack that first egg – 18-34 year olds displayed the least confidence, with more than a quarter (28%) feeling this way. Instead, a cheeky 47% of 18-34 year olds have tried to pass off a shop-bought cake as their own homemade masterpiece, with 78% being caught out as a result. Despite this, three in five (59%) of those said that baking using a packet mix is cheating and not at all ‘homemade’.
Brits no longer need to worry about their crumb-y cookery, thanks to an exclusive promotion from Farmhouse Inns dining and carvery. The restaurant brand is taking the pain out of patisserie by rewarding cake fans with a free slice of delicious cake, baked in-pub, on Tuesday 29th October – just head to your nearest restaurant, say the words ‘Fake Off’ at the bar and claim your free slice of cake to take home and enjoy whilst watching the GBBO final.
And what a relief! The research revealed that two thirds (66%) of Brits feel hungry when watching the GBBO, with more than half (58%) snacking on baked goods and sweet treats to stop themselves from salivating over the masterpieces on screen.
Stuart Watt, Brand Controller of Farmhouse Inns dining and carvery, explains: “Our show-stopping cakes are baked in pub by our expert ‘Cake-a-tiers’ who mix together the finest ingredients with unrivalled creativity and passion to create the most amazing looking and scrumptious selection of cakes.
“That’s why we are offering guests a free slice of cake to enjoy whilst watching the GBBO final – whether you pass it off as your own or just satisfy your own cake cravings triggered by the show, we’re sure guests will enjoy this indulgent treat.”
