Gold for Golden means quality is assured across “Old Speckled Hen” range

24 May, 2012

“Old Golden Hen” is celebrating a triple success for Britain’s leading premium ale brand[1] after becoming the third and final member of the “Old Speckled Hen” family to win a coveted Monde Selection Award.

Launched last summer, “Old Golden Hen” is brewed to appeal to premium lager drinkers looking for more taste, as well as existing ale drinkers. This refreshing golden beer was the most successful bottled ale NPD launch for 2011, delivering 13.5% of all bottled ale NPD growth in the year, despite only being launched in August[2].

“Old Golden Hen” joins “Old Speckled Hen” and “Old Crafty Hen” as a recipient of the renowned international quality mark.

The success follows Gold and Grand Gold awards in 2010 for “Old Speckled Hen” and “Old Crafty Hen” respectively and means retailers and customers can now be assured that every one of the award-winning “Old Speckled Hen” range has been tested and approved to the highest quality standards.

Dom South, Marketing Director Greene King Brewing and Brands, said: “Quality will always be king for us. As the brewer behind the ale brand that most customers want to see on the shelf[3] it’s imperative that the care and attention we put into crafting our beer translates into the perfect product our consumers expect. We are incredibly proud of the “Old Speckled Hen” range so it’s great to see it recognised at the highest level.”

“Old Golden Hen” is brewed using the finest pale malts and the rare Tasmanian galaxy hop, giving the beer its light golden colour, subtle tropical fruit notes and a deliciously refreshing and smooth finish. At 4.1% ABV it comes in 500ml bottles and features in all major multiples as well as most leading C&C and convenience operators.

Greene King’s Abbot Ale, Britain’s 7th biggest premium ale brand which is growing at 21% in value this year[4], also received a Gold Monde award.

Monde Selection tests consumer goods from all over the world before awarding bronze, silver, gold and grand gold quality labels. These can be compared to the quality stars of a hotel or those of the Michelin Guide.

Nearly 3,000 products are tested each year by a panel of more than 70 independent judges, including Michelin starred chefs, members of the French Culinary Academy, brewing engineers, university lecturers, nutrition and health consultants and chemical engineers.

The Monde Selection awards will be presented during a ceremony in Athens at the beginning of June.
